Silver Dimes

I think it is so cool that each little silver dime is now worth a little over a buck!!!:clap2:

I think it is really scare we've lost that much, even a little more, purchasing power since those things were minted! The silver in them wasn't worth their face value when originally struck.

I do like to look at all my Mercs and realize there'll all basically equivalent to $1 bills right now. They are pretty little things, and honest.

Mind-boggling, ain't it?

The girlfriend finally understood silver when she dropped by as I was counting out a half-bag of the little coins, with 5000 on my coffee table. One eye open, I held one between thumb and forefinger. Squinting over it in her direction, I said "60 cents!"

Made a huge impression.

Let me know if you can wrap your mind around $4 per coin. I can't, but that day is coming.

I use to buy a comic books with a silver dime. Silver still has a way to go because a silver dime still will not buy a comic book today. It's the old comic book price index theory that really matters.

Actually I was talking to my office mate about gasoline prices. Back in the early 60's gasoline was about 25 cents with occasional gas wars to 20 cents. This morning gasoline is $2.75. Not too far off. Your 1964 silver quarter has a melt value of $2.59 today according to coinflation.com. Take away all the gas taxes, and the relative value of silver and gasoline are not too different from 1964.

But you have to figure that oil is more scarce today and in larger demand.

You wouldn't know that gas is still cheap from the bleating, metallic honks of self-pity you hear everywhere, including this board.

At this rate, there will be a thread discussing how certain Bible verses explicitly support the right to cheap gasoline.

I'm sure the fix is in on petroleum prices, but after all these years, they're still about even with inflation.

Ditto with PMs: gold and silver have been playing catch-up until recently. Now the moves up with respect to other assets and commodities will begin.

Actually when I first came out of the army in 67 (and before I started taking "vacations" overseas) gas was 17 and 18 cents and then they came out with unleaded at 21 cents and everyone was raisin hell about the price, used to fill up my 64 Corvair for two bucks.

Just had to post to brag that I found a silver dime in change from my local coke machine! :aetsch: Given the recent correction, that's almost like finding a Sacagawea or SBA!

Speaking of SBA's, people complain that they tend to give them away like quarters. If it's such a problem, why haven't I ever received one in change in place of a quarter? :albertein

I am one of the seemingly few that thinks that gas is dirt cheap in the big scheme of things. Think about it: 5 million year old buried rotten dinosaur bones, pumped from under the desert sand, stored and then transported to port, loaded on a ship, sent 10,000 miles to another port, transported again to a refinery, loaded on a truck, sent to your local station and still costs less than a can of coke on a volume basis. It's cheap man.

You can make furniture out of it, boom boxes, computers and monitors, tubing for medical and thousands of other uses, roads, tires, compact discs, and on and on...

So we burn it in order to get to work.

Amazing: a gallon bottle of the stuff is enough to push my vehicle 30 miles, and piston engines burn it at 40% efficiency. Only $3.75. Damn.

And one gallon of gas contains energy equivalent to 500 man-hours of labor.

Waah! Waah! It's too expensive! Waah! Mommee!

:bawling: Oh boo-hoo-hoo-hoo hooo! Boo-hoo-hoo-hoo! :bawling:

I only started buying silver Mercury dimes last September. At that time, they were averaging about 53¢ each. Currently on eBay, they can be had for about 99¢. That’s a 87% jump in less than 8 months.
I think we all need a $100 rebate from congress because we can’t keep up with rising silver dime prices.

The comic book price index theory helps me keep track of prices through time. Of course in relation to silver, maybe the value of paper is rising faster. Trees may be a renewable resource but they sure ain't planting them fast enough.
